Dane Hutchings
Founder + CEO
As Founder and CEO of the California Public Policy Group, Dane Hutchings leverages over 15 years of experience advocating for the interests of both the public and private sectors. Starting as a sole practitioner with just one client, Dane meticulously built the firm into a diverse team that now serves clients from nearly every region statewide. Under his leadership, the firm expanded its services beyond legislative advocacy to include local, state, and federal grant writing. This strategic growth has empowered CPPG to secure hundreds of millions of dollars for communities throughout California.
A strategic leader and political expert, Dane possesses a deep understanding of the state and federal political landscapes, solidifying his reputation as a thought leader on policies vital to local government agencies. This expertise makes him a trusted voice for—and a direct conduit to—many of California’s most influential local government leaders.
Dane’s extensive background in government and trade association work is an invaluable asset. In 2014, Dane held the role of Legislative Representative and Federal Policy Liaison for the League of California Cities, where he served as a key strategist and advisor. His expertise spans multiple critical issue areas, including the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), labor relations, governmental administration, and election policies.
Before joining the League, Dane represented over 300 members of the retail food and supplier industry as a lobbyist with the California Grocers Association. His focus on labor relations, healthcare, and general business ensured alignment with local governmental policies while safeguarding client interests.
In 2010, Dane bridged government affairs and public relations at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, representing companies in the renewable energy, transportation, and private equity industries. During his tenure, he was a member of the communications strategy team for California’s high-speed rail infrastructure project and also spearheaded a successful California Office of Traffic Safety awareness campaign on the dangers of texting while driving.
As a thought leader and innovator in legislative advocacy, Dane remains committed to advancing effective and equitable policies that empower communities throughout California.
When he’s not running around the backyard with his energetic three-year-old daughter Isla or lobbying his infant daughter Sloane to give baby food a chance, Dane loves spending quality time with his wife Kara—exploring the outdoors, cooking together, and enjoying the occasional movie night.
